Advanced Standing and Exemptions
(previously known as Credit)

Advanced Standing and Exemptions are available to students who have already completed some University study. Gaining advanced standing and/or exemptions reduces the amount of time it takes to complete a degree.

Subjects completed at other institutions which do not have an equivalent subject at the University of Melbourne will be listed on students' transcripts as 'Advanced Standing'. Subjects completed at other institutions that are assessed as being equivalent to a subject offered at the University of Melbourne will be listed on students' transcripts as 'Exempt'

Advanced standing and exemptions may be granted if you have completed subjects equivalent in content and standard to those taught as part of the Bachelor of Commerce. For example if you have completed University level subjects (eg. UMEP) as part of your VCE or have completed degree studies at another University you may gain advanced standing toward your degree. Subjects that are considered equivalent to those available for study in the Bachelor of Commerce will normally be approved as exemptions. Being granted advanced standing and/or exemptions means that you need to complete fewer subjects to satisfy the requirements of the degree.

I believe I am eligible for Advanced Standing and/or Exemptions, what should I do?

If you believe you are eligible for advanced standing and/or exemptions you should consult the University's Advanced Standing Policy. You can then apply by completing the application for Advance Standing/Exemption Form (PDF,92.4kb). Any advanced standing or exemptions you receive will be confirmed in writing. Please submit completed forms and all relevant documention to the Commerce Student Centre.
